Anyone who works in an office will know just how much time they spend sat at their desk or hard at work in a meeting. For most people, the office workspace is more like home than anywhere else.
For this reason, it’s important to keep this space clean and hygienic. A tidy space makes for a tidy mind; you’ll never have to scramble for papers in a mountain of rubbish and you can reduce the risk of illness by ensuring your workspace is hygienic. Getting regular office cleaning by professionals is the best way to combat the bulk of your cleaning, but here are some tips you can use to keep your personal space clean in between visits from a commercial cleaner.
Clean Your Keyboard
You touch your keyboard every day and you no doubt move any germs and grime from this place to everything else you touch. Food, saliva, ink and germs carried from elsewhere all end up here. There are several ways in which you can clean up your keyboard; the first is to get rid of all the debris inside of it. Unplug the keyboard, turn it upside down and gently tap it – make sure you do this onto a surface you can wipe or directly over a large bin.
Once you’ve done this, you can take the individual keys off and wash them. Ensure you dry them before you put them back on, but before you do reattach them, try to clean the keyboard trenches. You can do this using compressed air or a damp cloth, just make sure it’s left to dry thoroughly first.
Maintain Your Mouse
Take a look down at your mouse – a really close look. If you haven’t ever cleaned your mouse you’ll notice all the muck and grime in the crevices. Turn the mouse upside down and the feet of your mouse, as well as it’s belly, will undoubtedly have muck on them too.
This accumulation of sweat and debris has been mashed together over time, but you can remove it by using a cotton bud, a toothpick and a damp cloth. Don’t forget to unplug the mouse first and to dry it thoroughly before using it again.
Titivate Your Telephone
This is another neglected, but heavily used, item in your personal workspace which you can take care of yourself. Unplug the phone first before cleaning – you don’t want to make any accidental phone calls.
Firstly, attend to the dial pad. Get rid of dust and use some disinfectant to gently clean the buttons and crevices. The mouthpiece and speaker can harbor sweat, grease, saliva and ear wax (no matter how clean you might think you are). Use a toothpick to gently unclog any of the holes and give the receiver – as well as the cords – a good wipe down.
Bowls, Plates & Cutlery
If you eat a lot of your meals at work then it might be worth investing in your own bowl, plate and cutlery to stash in your drawers. You can clean and dry these after use and keep them out of sight, ensuring you have clean utensils each day without cluttering up your desk or risking using dirty crockery from the office.
