The many things you can clean with vinegar

By 29 January 2014July 26th, 2020No Comments

There are a lot of cleaning products out there on the market these days which promise brilliant results, both chemical and biological, but until you’ve spent your hard earned money on them you won’t know whether they live up to those promises. Before you go out and attempt to find a specific cleaner for a specific purpose, why not try our white vinegar cleaning tips?

Plain white vinegar is the best variety to use in these scenarios, and be sure to have some warm water handy as it may be needed. You’ll see just how versatile this simple, household product can be – from the common knowledge tips to the downright bizarre ones!

Carpets

When you get a stain on your carpet you needn’t have the whole thing torn up to be refitted. Simply get a sponge to soak up the offending liquid, then dab or spray on white vinegar mixed with warm water. Leave this solution to work its magic for a few minutes and dab up with a towel. A repeat can help to ensure the stain is gone, but for tougher stains add a little dishwashing liquid into your white vinegar to help pull up the stain.

Sticky substances and glue

The back of stickers leaves a gluey mess on surfaces which can be difficult to get off, while leaving it will only make things worse. When you next find a sticky mess, dab it with white vinegar and let it soak a while before trying to wipe away any gunk. You should find it comes away easier now.

Drain cleaner

Does your drain smell funny or not flow as freely as it should? This could point to a block or a backed-up pipe which needs cleaning. First, pour some baking soda down your drain, quickly followed by white vinegar – this will froth and bubble so be careful. Once the solution has settled and been inside your pipes for around five minutes, you should flush it out with warm water.

Oven glass

We all know how much grime and gunk can build up on the inside window of the oven over time. A simple solution to this problem is to open the door, spray or pour on white vinegar across the surface and let it rest for around 15 minutes. Come back, wipe the door and you will have lifted all, if not most of, the offending splatter.

Blinds

Blinds around the home can prove difficult to clean as they are often fixed into your walls permanently. A handy way around this is to buy some cheap white cotton gloves and dip your fingers into white vinegar, then use your hands to wipe along both sides of the blind material.

Calcium build-up

An unattractive sight in any bathroom, the calcium build-up around your taps can be very off-putting. Believe it or not, you can use white vinegar here too. Soak a cloth in the vinegar and water solution, wrap it around them and leave it to soak in overnight. In the morning you should find nice shiny taps which look as good as new. This also works for other metals such as brass and copper.

Pets

Dogs often love to explore and get friendly with the other creatures they find while out on walks, but if your dog has ever come into contact with a skunk you will know that it isn’t a pleasant experience. White vinegar can help you in this situation too – make a 50/50 solution and gently rub it into your dog’s fur, then rinse with warm water. If it doesn’t work at first try, a few repeats and the smell should run right out.
